Machinability of SAE 1020 Tubes
Forming
Due to the fact that this alloy is highly ductile, it is easy to form SAE 1020 Tubes using all the conventional methods that are available.

Heat Treatment
The SAE 1020 Tubes can be hardened by heating it between 815°C and 871°C (1500°F and 1600°F), then quenching it in water to accomplish the hardening process. It is then necessary to temper the steel.
Forging
SAE 1020 Tubes should be forged at a temperature of 1260°C (2300°F) down to 982°C (1800°F).
Hot Working
There is a range of temperature range in which SAE 1020 Tubes can be hot worked, ranging from 482°C to 649°C (900°F to 1200°F).
Cold Working
There are various conventional methods that can be used to cold work SAE 1020 Tubes. During prolonged cold working, a stress relief annealing should be carried out in order to relieve the stress caused by the cold working.
Annealing
It is possible to achieve complete annealing of this alloy between 871-982°C (1600 to 1800°F) followed by slow furnace cooling of the alloy. The alloy will have a tensile strength of about 65 ksi as a result of this process. It is possible to perform a stress relief annealing at a temperature of 538°C (1000°F) if required.
Tempering
Depending on the strength level required, tempering should be followed by a heat treatment and quenching at a temperature between 315°C and 538°C (600°F and 1000°F). A temper temperature of 538°C (1000°F) provides the alloy with a tensile strength of 90 ksi, for instance.
Hardening
SAE 1020 Tubes can be hardened by cold working and by heat treatment, quenching, and tempering in addition to cold working.
Packing and Marking
- It is packed in bundles, wrapped in plastic, and properly protected for sea-worthy delivery or as requested by the customer.
- The marking should be in accordance with MIL-STD-129 for Military agencies and in accordance with Federal regulations. The standard. No. 123 is for civil agencies to include, but not limited to: Standard, graded, size, heat number, lot number, and so on.
