Round bars are made from a variety of metals and alloys.e of the most common alloys are chromium, nickel, and copper. They are also called 17-4PH round bars. Since the 17-4PH Polished Bar is made of martensitic steel and does not contain chromium, it is prone to rust. As soon as these 1.4542 Round Bars leave the mill, they have slight rust and oxide that can be removed by blasting them with steel.

It is usual for these UNS S17400 Bars to be pickled even though nitric hydrofluoric acid mixtures cannot be used to pickle them. If a 17-4PH Hot Rolled Round Bar needs to be pickled then it needs to be put through a nitric only bath that leaves a thin layer of iron oxide on the surface.

630 (17-4 PH) (UNS S17400) As a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel, it provides an outstanding combination of strength, corrosion resistance, mechanical properties at temperatures up to 600 °F (316 °C), good toughness both in the base metal and the welds, and short-time, low-temperature heat treatments that minimise warpage and scaling.
