DETAILED INFORMATION
Tubing used in the automobile industry is called driveshaft tubing. Steel and aluminium are used for transmission of power between different parts of an automobile. Thin steels such as stainless steel and aluminium alloys are generally used.
A reinforcing ring can be placed between both ends of the tubing to strengthen it. In addition to power steering systems, it can also be used in engines, transmissions, gearboxes, and brake pulleys. In addition to pumps and extruders, it is also used to drive fans.
It is often made of cast steel, but nowadays it is made from aluminium and steel, which is cheaper. The term “cable” refers to a very thin metal tube that runs between two parts of an automobile’s electrical system. One end of this cable is connected to the car’s battery, and the other end is connected to the vehicle’s electrical system.
All electrical systems except the transmission use this type of cable. Power steering cables are made from two parts: an outer coating and an inner core that are exposed to elements such as rain and sand outside the car.

1.Aluminium Driveshafts
Consider Action Machine aluminum driveshafts when you need a lightweight, high torque driveshaft with a nice polished finish. Aluminum driveshafts from Action Machine are ideal for street rods, show cars, race cars, and OEM replacements. For aluminum driveshafts, other driveline shops may use thinner tubes like .065″ or .083″ wall, but our volume purchasing allows us to use .125″ wall tubes for the same price as the thinner tubes.
For aluminum driveshafts, precision construction is essential. The presence of poor quality components, tubing that is out of tolerance, or a poorly balanced driveshaft can all lead to major vibration issues, or worse – a complete failure of the driveline. The commitment to quality at Action Machine led us to complete Spicer’s intensive dynamic reverse torsion fatigue testing requirements. Tests of our aluminum driveshafts for torsional load strength, weld penetration and quality, and overall manufacturing quality. Taking a look at some of our competitors, it is easy to see that aluminum driveshafts can be more expensive. However, a higher price does not necessarily mean a better shaft. There is no comparison to our quality. The testing has been done to prove it.
Our aluminum driveshafts are made with .125″ wall 6061 – T6 DOM aluminum tube. They provide the best combination of aluminum quality, torsional strength, long term durability and clean finish. All yokes are forged using 6061–T6 aluminum and individually machined to attain the best fit and performance. We never use cast aluminum. Our aluminum shafts are available in 3″, 3.5″, 4″, 4.5″ and 5″ diameters.
Replace your OEM pickup truck driveshaft with one of our aluminum 4 to 5″ diameter shafts. The lighter weight allows the aluminum shaft to cover the same distance as a steel 2 piece shaft while being longer. One piece aluminum shafts eliminate vibration and constantly worn center bearings associated with some trucks.
2. Steel Driveshafts
Our custom drive shafts are built to meet your specific needs and are built to last. Depending on your driving conditions and vehicle performance, you can vary tubing material and thickness, U Joint type, and component selection. The shaft design, dimensions, and critical speeds of driveshafts are checked in special computer software. Before we sell you something we know will break, we’ll tell you “No” if it won’t work.
The tube is straightened to tolerances less than half of OEM specs before any shaft is balanced. In addition to minimizing drive shaft “whip” at higher RPMs, a straighter tube allows the driveshaft to spin closer to its exact centerline. Straight tubes make balancing the shaft easy. With balance weight allowances far below OEM specifications, our shafts are high-speed balanced on the latest driveline manufacturing equipment.
As our steel driveshafts are made from driveline quality tubing, they are stronger and straighter from the beginning compared to regular cold rolled tubing. The versatility, strength, and affordability of steel make it our most popular material choice.
Our high-strength steel driveshafts can be custom designed for
- Drive shaft replacement or repair.
- Circle track cars, street rods, and performance cars.
- For box / flatbed trucks, motor homes, and vans, we offer light and medium duty trucks.
- Applications for heavy duty trucks and semi-diesel tractors.
- For trucks, vans, and motor homes, multiple piece driveshafts are available.
- 4 x 4 trucks.
Driveshaft tubing Sizing
There can be a wide variety of sizes of driveshaft tubing available depending on the application as well as the specific vehicle. Here is a general driveshaft tubing size chart that lists the common sizes that are used in different types of vehicles. Please find the chart below for further information.
- A 2.5-inch wheel is required for small cars
- There is a difference of 3 inches between a mid-size car and a light-duty truck
- Trucks and SUVs with full-size bodies: 3.5 inches
- Trucks with a wheelbase of at least 4 inches
It’s important to keep in mind that this is only a general guide, and there may be variations based on the specific vehicle and its powertrain requirements based on this guide. A professional mechanic or driveshaft specialist is the best person to consult if you are unsure of the correct size of driveshaft for your car.

Driveshaft tubing advantages
In addition to being an essential component of a vehicle’s drivetrain system, drive shaft tubing also offers a number of advantages, such as:
- High Strength: Driveshaft tubing is generally made from high-strength materials, such as steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber, which provide exceptional strength and durability in high-stress applications, regardless of the alloy incorporated.
- Light Weight: There are some driveshaft tubing materials that are much lighter than steel, such as aluminum and carbon fiber, so this can help to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle and improve fuel economy.
- Increased Performance: A reduction in the weight of the driveshaft allows for a more efficient transfer of power to the wheels, resulting in increased acceleration and improved overall performance of the vehicle.
- Improved Handling: In addition to improving vehicle handling and stability, a lighter driveshaft can also improve the performance of high-speed applications.
- Reduced Vibration: The drive shaft tubing has been designed in a way that minimizes vibration and allows the car to ride smoothly and quietly for the traveler.
- Flexibility: The drive shaft tubing can be tailored to fit a wide variety of vehicle applications, which allows the manufacturing process to be more flexible and adaptable.
Generally speaking, driveshaft tubing plays an important role in the performance, efficiency, and safety of a vehicle. Driveshaft tubing offers several advantages over other components of the drivetrain in terms of performance, efficiency, and safety.
Driveshaft tubing Types
It is important to remember that there are several types of driveshaft tubing materials available, each having its own set of properties and advantages. Driveshaft tubing can be divided into the following types:
- Steel:-Due to its high strength and durability, steel is the most common material used for driveshaft tubing due to its high strength and durability properties. Steel driveshafts are also relatively inexpensive to manufacture and repair.
- Aluminum:
Driveshaft tubing made of aluminum is much lighter than steel, which can improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle, as well as its overall performance. Although aluminum is stronger than steel, its manufacturing process is more expensive and its strength is not as good as steel. - Carbon Fiber:
It is important to note that carbon fiber driveshaft tubing is extremely lightweight and strong, which makes it an excellent choice for high-performance applications. However, carbon fiber driveshafts are also the most expensive as well as the most difficult to manufacture and repair.Composite: - Fiberglass and epoxy are two of the most common materials used for making composite driveshaft tubing. The advantages of composite driveshafts are that they are lightweight and relatively strong, however, they may not be as durable as steel or carbon fiber driveshafts.
- Hybrid:
It is becoming more common for driveshaft manufacturers to use a combination of materials to create hybrid driveshafts that offer the benefits of both materials, such as steel and carbon fiber.
Each type of driveshaft tubing has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of material will depend on the specific application and the specific performance requirements of the vehicle. A professional mechanic or driveshaft specialist can help you determine the best type of driveshaft tubing for your vehicle by consulting with them about the type of driveshaft you need.
